The Rotary Four-Way Test Speaking Competition for year 6 students was held last Wednesday evening, with twelve year 6 students from six local primary schools (a record entry) providing tremendous entertainment for the 90 plus guests in attendance. The quality and presentation of the speakers was outstanding, with a diverse range of topics covered (see the full list above under General News Items). It proved to be a very difficult task to select a winner, evident by the long period of deliberation required by the adjudicators at the end of the night. The worthy winner was Cassie Clarkson from Kapinara Primary School, whose topic was "Soft Plastics". The runner-up was Oliver Patterson from Wembley Primary speaking on "The Men's Shed" (how appropriate!). These two students will progress to the District Final on 15th September, which event will be conducted by us at the Cambridge Bowling Club.
Thanks to President Jeremy and Don Holywell for their great hosting on stage, the adjudicators Adam Ansted, Jean McSkimming and Peter Burns, and Mike Graham as timekeeper. Special thanks to Jeanette for organising the catering and for all of her work behind the scenes, Eileen for the sausage rolls and Leonie for the muffins. Also to Libby for arranging the raffle hamper, which was a great success. A really enjoyable evening was had by all and the District Final in four weeks time should be equally entertaining. (Thanks to Frank Nathan for this summary).
