Peter Kennedy AM is a well-known political commentator and retired journalist, and he came along to this week’s meeting to provide a review of the forthcoming 2025 Federal Election. It is interesting to note that there are many people who have voted already, and Peter started by reminding us about the statistics from the 2022 Election where Labor won 77 seats with 32.6% of the vote and the Coalition secured 58 seats with 35.7 %. The Greens took 4 seats with 12.25% of the vote. However, the latest Newspoll predictions for 2025 place Labor with 34% of the vote, Coalition 35%, Greens 12% and One Nation 7% which on a two Party preferred basis would result in Labor securing 52% and the Coalition 48% - demonstrating that preferences are going to play a vital role in the outcome. The major issues that voters are confronted with revolve around the Cost of Living; Housing Shortages; Health Services; Law & Order; National Security; Energy Sources; and the Live Sheep Trade. Peter made reference to the situation in America and where Trump stands in the eyes of their population groups – the disapproval ratings are heading skyward there! Back in Australia Albanese is seen as a better PM than Dutton would be, and Peter concluded his talk by listing a handful of seats in WA that should be watched – including Curtin where preferences will determine the outcome.
