Alecia Benzie, Head of Development at The Kids Research Institute of Australia, provided an insight into the organisation’s activities and objectives. The Institute has rebranded to remove Telethon from its name. Telethon has been a constant supporter, however the new name reflects the fact that The Kids, as they are now known, and Telethon are independent entities. The Kids was founded in the 1980’s by Prof Fiona Stanley and Lou Landau. It is now located near the Perth Children’s Hospital, with research 100% focused on children and youth’s most devastating, complex, and costly issues. The Kids has over 1200 researchers, students and volunteers. The new name and brand align with the launch of a 10 year strategy – “Research Reimagined”- which sets out a comprehensive plan for even greater impact in the years ahead. The Kids continues to have an overarching commitment to address the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and families, informed by, and in genuine partnership with, first Nations communities and leaders. Fundraising is very competitive. Their source of funds includes, corporates, trusts, foundations, high net-worth individuals and the community. The Stan Perron Charitable Foundation has provided commitment of significant support over a 10 year period.
