John M Taylor came along to delve into the topic of raising fens tigers, and we soon learned that John is the author of four books so far. His first book is called Raising Fens Tigers, and it is an anthology of original poems that he has written, all of which focus on the people and places of the fens in England in the aftermath of World War II. John was brought up in a fenland village, and he described how the original wetlands were drained in the 1600s for conversion into farmland. The original inhabitants were incensed by this and they fought like tigers to retain their habitat. The area is very large and stretches from just north of Cambridge right up to the part of England that is adjacent to The Wash i.e. it covers around 3000 sq km. Building a house required very deep footings so that it rested on clay and not malleable peat, and as the land sank many structures with inadequate footings took on unusual shapes! John read a couple of his poems from Raising Fens Tigers – one a very poignant verse about Mrs Fitch who couldn’t comprehend that her son Jimmy had perished in the war, and the other titled If You Want to Know the Time Ask a Policeman. John also described his latest book which is called I Will Find You. This focuses on WA and Perth, and deals with child migration and the orphanage at Clontarf. John’s presentation was thought provoking and humorous.
