Yet another last minute change in plans due to Covid, so instead of our Guest Speaker we entertained ourselves! Incoming President Frank Nathan started the ball rolling by giving a potted picture of his history and background, and this proved to be a little unusual in some respects! Whilst his forebears originated in Ireland and England, Frank is a third generation Aussie and was born in King Edward Memorial Hospital. He grew up in Mount Hawthorn and went to the local Primary School, then Hale. His father practised as a dentist in the area for many years, and wanted Frank to get his teeth into the profession and join him in the business! Frank decided otherwise, and instead joined a prominent Australian Bank for a short stint whilst he decided what career to follow. Nearly 50 years later he left the banking industry after a very successful career! Early in the piece he met Eileen; they married and Frank was transferred to London for a couple of years. They travelled there the hard way, starting in Kathmandu and taking a very slow bus to London through all sorts of exotic places including the Khyber Pass! Frank has been a Rotary Club President before – in 1983 – and all are looking forward to his tenure. Our new Member John Gartlan then told us a bit about his youth and his law practice in Melbourne, including one unique incident. Most complaints against lawyers relate to costs, delays or failure to communicate, but John was accused of stealing a household chainsaw! Not guilty of course, but a fascinating journey for him and us!
