Our recent meeting was a joint one hosted by the Matilda Bay Club, and included Rotarians from Matilda Bay, Western Endeavour and Cambridge. We were privileged to hear an address by Prof. John Newnham AM, the 2020 Senior Australian of the Year. John is Head of the UWA Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at KEMH, and Chief Scientific Director of the Women and Infants Research Foundation. He was born and educated in WA and graduated in medicine at UWA. He acquired an early interest in obstetrics at KEMH, with particular emphasis on the prevention of pre-term delivery. Pre-term birth is the major cause of death in children. In 1989 John pioneered the Raine Study which involved investigating 2,900 unborn babies from early pregnancy and then following their health for life. This was the world's first pregnancy–focused lifetime study, and is now entering a third generation. More recently John has researched how the rate of pre-term birth may be lowered. This programme has been expanded to a national scale, and a 20% reduction rate has been achieved to date. This was an outstanding address which was enjoyed by all present.
