Karen Pfister joined us this week to tell us all about Gan Jing (meaning ‘clean’) World (GJW) which was established in New York in 2022 with a view to creating a positive digital community which is filled with wholesome content that is free from gratuitous violence, sex, crime and objectively harmful behaviour. This came in the aftermath of Meta admitting that it had contributed to teen on-line addiction and agreeing to pay in the region of US$17 billion in compensation. GJW seeks to put humanity before technology, and it has clocked up 100 million users in less than four years. These users receive privacy as a top priority. GJW is available in eleven languages and has a number of avenues covering entertainment, news and exploration. One avenue is Gan Jing Campus which provides safe on-line learning and entertainment for kids, and is promoted as a great gift for teachers and educators. GJW hosts an annual ‘Be Kind Be Cool’ (also known as Kindness is Cool) video awards event, and the objective is to celebrate creators, students and artists who promote positivity, respect and kindness. The winners are featured on prominent billboards in Times Square, New York and receive substantial prizes as well. Karen provided many slides to reinforce her presentation, and there were a lot of questions from the floor to conclude the proceedings.
